The stone stairway in the south aisle led up to the rood loft and dates from about 1500 A.D. The Rood was an image of Christ with the figures of St. Mary and St. John.
The loft was normally a passage behind the Rood used by the musicians, the choir, by the reader of the Gospel, for giving out public notices and for facilitating the decoration of the Rood.
The two recesses to the right of this stairway were discovered in 1891 at the time of the Church's restoration and it is assumed they were used for the Reservation of the Blessed Sacrament or as cupboards for the storage of the sacred vessels and other church plate.
